He's not that kind of angel.

Jarrid is a “Bound One”: half angel, half human, trained from childhood to enforce Heaven’s laws on earth. An assassin with no remorse. And no choice. When he discovers an ancient ritual called Ascension, which might give him a shot at freedom, he can’t resist his lifelong dream. He only needs to find one last Renegade angel and take him down…using a certain woman to flush the angel out of hiding.

She's not what he's expecting.

News reporter Ionie Gifford has no clue an outlaw angel wants her dead, much less why, but she does know one thing: the enigmatic Jarrid, with his penetrating silver eyes and his worship-worthy body, is her ticket to the city's supernatural underworld, where she might finally be able to locate her mother's killer. For that kind of information, she's willing to risk everything...

They can't be together -- but can't keep apart...

Blindsided by Ionie's beauty and tenacity, Jarrid finds the millennia-old glacier around his heart melting. But when he's faced with a choice, will he sacrifice Ionie for freedom from his brutal servitude—or agree to be bound for eternity, to protect the life of the woman he's falling in love with?

From novelist Tricia Skinner comes a story that will have fans of action-packed love stories applauding. Seamlessly combining elements of paranormal romance and gritty urban fantasy, the Angel Assassins series is a heart-pounding spin on angel mythology.

**OctobeRect Fest Wrap-Up**

Well, today is the last day of October, thus my OctobeRec Fest is at its end. And I only managed to get 4 reviews done this month. I was trying to finish Consequences by Aleatha Romig (a recommendation from Braine @TalkSupe) but I'm still not quite done so my review will post in November.

This was such a fun way to spend my month. And it taught me a few things:

1) YOU, my blogging friends, read some great books! ;) Thanks so much for all the recommendations. I'm going to continue to make my way through them through November and December. Oh, who am I kidding?!? Do you know how many books y'all have caused me to one-click? It'll take me longer than 2 months. But I'll be working on it. :)

2) I read at a much slower rate when I don't have imposed deadlines. I was anticipating reading so many books and I only managed 4 (well, 4.9). It has been a busy month with marching band, family, AND I worked more than usual too. But still...

3) I liked reading at the slower pace.

I think this is a feature I'll do annually. It was a great way to make time to read some books I found because of YOU!

If you missed any of the four reviews I posted, you can read them by clicking on the titles below.

Synopsis
When Rory Macintosh's roommates find out that their studious and shy friend has never been with a guy, they decide that, as an act of kindness they'll help her lose her virginity by hiring confident, tattooed bad boy Tyler Mann to do the job...unbeknownst to Rory.

Tyler knows he's not good enough for Rory. She's smart, doctor smart, while he's barely scraping by at his EMT program, hoping to pull his younger brothers out of the hell their druggy mother has left them in. But he can't resist taking up her roommates on an opportunity to get to know her better. There's something about her honesty that keeps him coming back when he knows he shouldn't...

Torn between common sense and desire, the two find themselves caught up in a passionate relationship. But when Tyler's broken family threatens to destroy his future, and hers, Rory will need to decide whether to cut her ties to his risky world or follow her heart, no matter what the cost...

Oh, the emotions this story evoked! Watching Rory evolve from this awkward, closed-off young woman into a vibrant, more self-assured one - all while staying true to herself - was wonderful.

Rory is a girl I immediately connected with. I, too, was always the girl on the outside, watching everyone around me. I have trouble letting people in as well. Witnessing Rory go through this transformation - seeing her great epiphanies about human nature and relationships - well, it touched me in a significant way.I did not identify with Rory's logical side, however. Math and I are not good friends. :) But I appreciated how McCarthy used it in developing Rory and explaining how she approached life.

Tyler - of my goodness. Now only is he a tattooed bad boy, but he knows his literature equally as well as he knows his way around the family body. ;) He had me mooning over him just as much as Rory. And when he said:
"It was never about sex for me, it was always about me wanting to be with you, getting to know you."
I was a goner! He's absolutely right and being a part of he and Rory getting to know one another - showing parts of themselves they've never shown anyone - EVER - made the foundation they were building all the stronger. The odds were definitely against these tow making it. They are very different, from two different worlds. But they seemed made for one another.
"Because we both see beyond what other people see about us. We both know that sometimes the best things are below the surface. When I look at you, I see this amazingly smart, funny, generous, and beautiful girl. Did you know that?"
Rory learned some lessons about living that even in my 40's, I need to heed, like:
"Being a loner was ultimately selfish, and if you never gave of yourself, you never got in return."
True also introduced us to the characters we'll be learning more about in the series. I'm not sure what I think of Rory's roommates Kylie and Jessica. In so many ways, I see the do care about Rory and were acting in her best interests. But the ways they behaved were befuddling - especially the vulnerable/confident flip-flop. I'm eager to see them grow.

On a personal, and geeky, note, I was delighted in how McCarthy used literature to teach Rory. For instance, this epiphany occurred while she and Tyler were discussing A Streetcar Named Desire...

"All their relationships are delusional, from what I can tell. Blanche hides in the dark so men don't guess her real age, she and her sister pretend that nothing bad has ever happened, Stanley doesn't do anything but play poker and boss Stella around. If they would just like communicate with each other, they could resolve all their issues in ten minutes."
"That's what makes the book so realistic," he told me dryly.
"Real people don't discuss shit with each other."
He had a point. I didn't really discuss my emotions with anyone, either. I had spent most of my life being a silent observer. "Oh."
In one fell swoop, I got it. Literature wasn't intended to be about perfect people, it was about flaws, very real and very deep human flaws.

**That's What HE Said ~ #17**

That's What He Said is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely ladies @Chapter Break. Here's the deal: every Thursday, post a line from your book boyfriend to his heroine. Keep in mind, these are direct quotes from dialog in the books. The quote doesn't have to be romantic - just something our hunky hero said to his lucky lady. Be sure to link up over at Chapter Break as well.

My pick this week for That's What He Said is from:

Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi
from the Shatter Me Series

***

And I've fallen.

So hard.

I've hit the ground. Gone right through it. Never in my life have I felt this. Nothing like this. I've felt shame and cowardice, weakness and strength. I've known terror and indifference, self-hate and general disgust. I've seen things that cannot be unseen.

And yet I've known nothing like this terrible, horrible, paralyzing feeling. I feel crippled. Desperate and out of control. And it keeps getting worse. Every day I feel sick. Empty and somehow aching.

Love is a heartless bastard.

I'm 100% Team Warner!
I still have to read the last in the series, but I love this series and Mafi's writing!!

**New Adult Review ~ The Bet ~ Rachel Van Dyken**

The Bet (The Bet, #1)The Bet
The Bet Series #1
Release Date: March 26, 2013
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance
Source: Purchased paperback
Rating: 3.5 Bookworms
Goodreads

Synopsis
"I have a proposition for you." Kacey should have run the minute those words left Seattle millionaire Jake Titus's mouth. It's been years since Kacey's seen her childhood friend Jake, but the minute Jake mentions his ill grandmother, Kacey is ready to do anything for the sweet old woman. And if that means pretending they're engaged for her sake - so be it.

But Kacey wasn't counting on Jake's older brother Travis still being there. She calls him "Satan" for a reason: she's never forgotten the way he teased and taunted her. Yet when they meet again, Travis's gorgeous smile is a direct hit to her heart...and Kacey's more confused than ever. As the days pass, only one thing starts to become alarmingly clear - she never should have accepted Jake's deal...

Back in June, I attended the Emerald City Author Even and spent the weekend with Robyn (@RobGirlBooks). We, of course, picked up a few books and one of those was The Bet. I don't know if Robyn saw the irony in us picking up a book about a bet, seeing as we've made a few with one another, but I thought it was pretty funny! ;) Oh, we met Rachel Van Dyken, too. She's adorable! Anyway, a few weekends ago, Robyn and I read The Bet together. We ended up chatting about it over the phone, so I don't have the chat. But here are my thoughts.

***
The Bet was a sweet, light, and quick read. Kacey, Jake, and Travis grew up together. Jake and Kacey have always been best friends and inseparable. He's always taken care of her. But Travis has been in love with Kacey since...well, forever. He's just never known how to show her.

When the Titus brothers' grandma has a stroke, Jake feels pressured to show he's ready to settle down and run the family company. And since Grandma loves Kacey, she's the obvious choice. Kacey, having always been close to the family and particularly Grandma, agrees to Jake's plan in order to help Grandma recover. She agrees to spend the weekend at the Titus family home, pretending to be engaged to Jake. What Kacey doesn't plan on is having to deal with Travis. He's always picked on her, starting with pulling her pigtails and throwing rocks at her when they were young. However, the more time she spends with Jake and Travis, the more she realizes she'd rather spend her time with Travis.

One thing Robyn and I both agreed on was that there wasn't anything earth-shattering about this story. It was predictable but it was fun. We enjoyed the history between Kacey, Travis, and Jake, the bantering, teasing, etc., especially between Kacey and Travis. It was a sweet story about two brothers and the girl they both want. And it was typical NA fare with the characters figuring out what they want and who they are, which is something I like about NA. It's also a story about coming home. Oh, and a grandma who isn't above conniving and conspiring to speed these three along their path.

I will probably continue this series at some point because I'm interested to see Jake get his comeuppance. :)

Bought, Borrowed, & Bagged is a weekly meme, hosted by TalkSupe, where I share with you the books I have bought, borrowed, or bagged (gifted or won) plus a recap of the previous week's reviews, upcoming reviews, and any other bookishness I want to share. :)

I left last Thursday morning to attend The Queen City Indie Con in Cincinnati, OH. The conference was great. I learned a lot and I met some great people and authors! Aaannd I bought LOTS of books at the signing. I'm not even going to attempt to put them all on here at once, y'all. Just suffice it to say I really gave my credit card a workout. ;) I met Samantha Young! I got to see Abbi Glines, Amy A. Bartol, Tara Sivec, ALEATHA ROMIG!!, L.P. Dover, Amanda Jason, Misty Provencher, Tessa Teevan, Tia Louise, and many, many more! It was so much fun.

The Truth About Alice
The Truth About Alice
by Jennifer Mathieu
Release Date: June 3, 2014
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Realistic
Source: Roaring Brook Press via Netgalley
Rating: 4.5 Bookworms
Goodreads

Synopsis
Everyone know Alice slept with two guys at one party.

But did you know Alice was sexting Brandon when he crashed his car?

It's true. Ask ANYBODY.

Rumor has it that Alice Franklin is a slut. It's written all over the bathroom stall at Healy High for everyone to see. And after star quarterback Brandon Fitzsimmons dies in a car accident, the rumors start to spiral out of control.

In this remarkable debut novel, four Healy High students - the girl who has the infamous party, the car accident survivor, the former best friend, and the boy next door - tell all they know.

But exactly what is the truth about Alice? In the end there's only one person to ask: Alice herself.

The Truth About Alice is a very moving and realistic look at teen life. It also speaks to the power of words.

This story is told from four different POVs - all characters with varying degrees of interaction with Alice. There's Elaine, the head of the popular girl clique, who has a grudge against Alice over something from 8th grade. Then there's Josh, the star wide receiver who survived the car accident Alice supposedly caused. There's Kelsie, Alice's BFF, who was so quick to turn her back on Alice in order to ensure she kept her popular girl status. And finally, Kurt, the nerdy boy who was the only one to reach out to Alice when she most needed someone.

Alice herself is just a normal girl with a less than normal family. And she falls victim to nasty words and rumors.

This was a difficult story to read. I wanted to shake Elaine, Kelsie, and Josh on several occasions, but I remember being a teen. Heck I'm mom to two teen girls. And although I've taught my girls (all my kids, actually) compassion and right from wrong, ultimately their behavior is their choice. I'm not intimating that any of these characters had strong role models at home. And they live in a small, judgmental town. But they all seemed to realize what they were doing was hurtful and wrong. And yet they didn't stop.

Alice said:
There is one thing I've learned about people: they don't get that mean and nasty overnight. It's not human nature. But if you give people enough time, eventually they'll do the most heartbreaking stuff in the world.
I think this basically sums up this story. I choose to believe that Elaine, Kelsie, and Josh saw the errors of their way and lived differently. What I know is that words carry unbelievable power to hurt. And it's a hurt that can't be undone. But Alice's experience taught her an invaluable lesson about what's important in life.

**Promo Blitz & Giveaway ~ Faithful ~ S.A. Wolfe**

We're celebrating the release of
FAITHFUL by S.A. Wolfe
from October 23-November 6!

***

Title: FAITHFUL (Fearsome #3)
Author: S.A. Wolfe
Age Group: New Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: October 23, 2014
Goodreads

Book Description:
A bombshell waitress who wants more. A former FBI agent who wants less ...
except for her.

Imogene Walsh has always been unapologetically confident and ruthlessly opinionated with people, particularly men. No one is spared from her unfiltered mouth, but it hasn’t seemed to deter Cooper MacKenzie. Although he is not the clean-cut, businessman type she’s always thought she should pursue, Imogene is drawn to the sexy outsider who is the hottest topic in town gossip, the fantasy
heartthrob women love to speculate about.

She has spent most of her life in the little town of Hera, NY, putting her numerous forgettable relationships behind her and floundering in both her professional and personal life. Work and men—neither have gone well for her. Now it’s reached the point where she wants to stop playing it safe.

It may be time to live up to her tough reputation and take a chance on Cooper, the only man who isn’t intimidated by Imogene’s brash personality. However, it could be a thrilling ride that doesn't end well.

*This is a standalone novel in the FEARSOME Series.

My single friends are getting married and caught up in their newfound blissfully wedded lives of creating homes and being spouses. Meanwhile, I’m being left behind.
Therefore, I did what any normal woman would do. I grabbed the first bottle of champagne Lois had opened and got busy, pushing that tinge of sorrow and jealousy so far down my throat all I could feel was a complacent numbness.
Now I’m losing the cute, little runt, and I’m lost, stuck in the maze. I stop running and put my hands on my hips as I catch my breath while Toby’s giggles continue to grow farther away.
“Imogene,” a deep voice purrs my name, smooth and rich like sweet liquid on his lips.
When I turn around, he smiles. Man, he is handsome. I’ve always thought so, but tonight, the moonlight captures his tall, lean form in an unearthly sight of mythical beauty. His shoulder-length golden  hair shines, and his gray eyes stalk me like a wild cat. Being drunk takes my imagination to thoughts I have been dismissing for months. Inebriation is also what makes it easy for me to walk quickly towards him and fling my arms around his neck. Then I pull him down for the kiss I have long fantasized about.
Strong and solid, he resists my brazen behavior before giving in and kissing me deeply. The smoothness of his movements comes from experience and confidence and, hopefully, excitement for me. One of his hands presses against my lower back, pulling me tightly to him while the other reaches under my skirt and firmly holds one of my butt cheeks.
I grab fistfuls of his thick hair as I stand on tiptoes to kiss him. When we unlock our lips for air, I feel him smile against my cheek, and then I bury my face against the warm skin of his neck.
“Imogene,” he whispers, his breath tickling my ear and sending a shiver of tingles through me. I close my eyes and hold on to him. “I think I drank too much.”
“I’ve got you.”
I feel my feet leave the ground as he lifts me up. My head is about to roll backwards before he adjusts me so my face rests against his hard chest. My arms are still wrapped around his neck as a sleepy contentment takes over my body. I sigh, and his chest rumbles with a laugh.
This is an unexpected turn of events, one I don’t want to end.
